PS. Who is Annie?

Annie’s Loft is named after Tina's great-great-great grandmother, Ann Manry (‘Irish Annie’, 1825-1860) who was brought to NZ from Ballarat, Australia with their daughter Rebecca, by husband Sam Williams (‘Yankee Sam’, 1817-1888).

Sam was an American whaler who worked as a boat steerer for Harry Weller around Banks Peninsula & Timaru in the 1830s. He stayed on after the whaling station closed and became the first permanent resident in Timaru. The Ballarat gold rush began in 1851 and Sam no doubt went to try his luck. Annie is not in any records that we can find, so how did an Irish woman get to Australia in the mid 1800s? The information seems to be well buried!

Sam & Annie ran the first accommodation house on the beach in Timaru, one of a handful of buildings in 1859 when the Strathallan settlers arrived. Sam later ran the Timaru and Club Hotels.
